Privacy Policy

Rain Night Café is built to need as little about you as possible: no account, no camera, no microphone in the main café, and no advertising trackers. This page explains what we do collect, and why.

Last updated 29 October 2026.

In the café

  • Nickname, avatar, status and intention. Other people in the room see these while you are there. They are held in the server’s memory for your visit and are not saved to a database.
  • Chat messages are shown to the room and disappear after five minutes. They are not saved to a database.
  • Staff bots. To write replies from the café’s openly-labelled staff bots, recent chat messages and nicknames from the room may be sent to an AI provider (Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude).
  • Campfire voice connects people directly in the browser (WebRTC). When a direct connection isn’t possible, audio may pass through a relay service. We don’t record voice.

If you give us your email

  • Sending yourself the link and reminders: we store the email address and where on the site you entered it.
  • Earlier free trials and feedback: for trials and feedback notes from before we stopped offering them, we keep the email, a random device identifier and, for trials, the IP address used.

If you buy a Café Pass

Payments are handled by Razorpay. We never see your card details. Razorpay tells us the email address, payment ID, order ID, plan and amount of your payment, and we store the email and payment ID with a hashed access token so your pass can unlock the Library and Campfire, including on another device. Razorpay may ask for a phone number at checkout; we don’t store it. Razorpay’s own privacy policy covers the payment itself. Passes bought earlier through Gumroad are kept the same way, with the Gumroad license key in place of the payment ID.

Usage statistics

We record anonymous product events, such as a guide being read, a focus session starting or finishing, or a pass being chosen. Each event carries a random ID kept in your browser, a session ID, the page path and how you arrived (for example a search engine or a campaign link). We don’t attach your email or name to these events. We also use Vercel Web Analytics and Ahrefs Web Analytics for page-view statistics.

Cookies and browser storage

  • A cookie that keeps your Café Pass unlocked on this device.
  • Local storage for your settings (sound levels, onboarding, saved looks) and the random analytics ID above.

No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies are used.

Who processes data for us

  • Vercel: website hosting and page-view analytics.
  • Railway: hosting for the café server and its database.
  • Razorpay: Café Pass payments and refunds.
  • Gumroad: passes bought before we moved to Razorpay.
  • Google (Gemini) or Anthropic (Claude): staff-bot chat replies.
  • Ahrefs: page-view analytics.
  • Google Fonts: web fonts.
  • Open Library and Project Gutenberg: book covers and public-domain texts in the Library.
  • A WebRTC relay service: Campfire voice, only when needed.

How long we keep it

Room presence and chat last only as long as described above. Emails, trial records and pass records are kept while the café runs, or until you ask us to delete them. Anonymous usage events are kept to understand how the café is used.

Your choices

Email hello@rainnightcafe.com to see, correct or delete the data linked to your email address. Deleting a pass record means that pass can no longer be restored. The café is not intended for children under 13.
